DANZARAMA 2011

WHAT IS DANZA-RAMA?

Danza Loca’s first ever Latin American Gala Cabaret/Ball event, highlighting the talent, skill, enthusiasm, and ability to party(!), of Perth’s Latin Dance Community, i.e YOU!

Great opportunity to celebrate our first 10 years of success, bringing together the people who make up the multiple valuable facets of our extraordinary dance studio, as well as many of the other dance professionals, studios and contributors to the rich and vibrant scene we are all a part of.

Dine, dance and be entertained by live band, DJ’s, drummers, amazing group performances and couples demonstrations from selected students and professionals. You can even be part of the Cabaret show! Private lesson students are encouraged to present specially choreographed “Spotlight” performances with their instructors, while both Salsa and ZUMBA® students have opportunities to rehearse and take part in group performances too.

Participate in friendly amateur competitions designed specifically to give social dance students and amateur dancers a rare opportunity to “strut their stuff”. Competition dancing is generally considered the real fast-track to improved dancing, due to the increased motivation to practice, and we are really excited to be able to offer this avenue of growth to our students. Naturally, the best dancing on the day wins, although these DANZA- RAMA #1 competitions are far more about the preparation, the fun experience and “having a go”. Not feeling “competitive”? There’s still lots of value to be had cheering your friends and heckling your enemies! (Or like Simon, just heckling your friends…). There will be some novelty events (read on..) also, for those who want to get involved without taking it too seriously.

And let’s not forget the PARTY! With around 200 Salsa students and 2000 Zumberas currently attending weekly, plus over 10 years’ (23 for Simon) ex-students and friends made on the way and still supporting us today, DANZA-RAMA #1 promises to be a sell-out. A live band (TBC) plus all our Latin DJ friends and percussionists will be making the party and keeping the dance-floor hot, and special guest performers for both Salsa and ZUMBA are being confirmed as you read this, as well as a few surprises we have already planned for you.

WHEN AND WHERE IS DANZA-RAMA #1?

November 12th, 6.30pm-1am, Cracovia Club, 375 Marshall Rd, Beechboro.

ENTER OUR (PARTNERED) SOCIAL COMPETITIONS!

Number on your back, partners hand giving your sweaty palm a reassuring squeeze as you enter the floor. No turning back now..

Got what it takes?

Can you win the hearts and minds of your peers, the audience and judges?

Can you dance for 90 seconds without blowing it?!

8 Latin & American dances across 4 awesome formats, plus a variety of novelty events will give every dancer an opportunity to test themselves in a fun and supportive environment against other dancers of similar level of learning and ability, through the restricted syllabi format explained below.

Competitions will be both “Restricted”, (meaning that all dancers can dance steps only from a restricted syllabus to avoid disqualification), or “Open”, testing yourself against all comers, crushing ALL opposition, and later exiting the podium, bathed in glory clutching the winner’s prize… …well that’s Plan “A” anyway. Plan “B” generally revolves around not forgetting your steps! (At least not as much your competition: They’ll be nervous too!) Sounds like fun? You’d better believe it!

Entry forms will be available at all Danza Loca venues from Monday 22nd August or from this page (Look for the GREEN boxes)!

OPEN vs RESTRICTED SYLLABUS COMPETITION:

Restricted Syllabi competitions level the playing field by restricting the steps permissible by all dancers. Open competitions are essentially unrestricted (although there are some restrictions regarding safety- see rules and guidelines section).

Salsa Casino has 3 levels of competition: Restricted 1, Restricted 2 & Open level.

All other dances at DANZA-RAMA #1 will have only 2 levels, Restricted or Open, except Son which has Open level only).

You cannot compete in the same dance at both restricted and open levels within the same format.

8 DANCES:

The style-based criteria, and Restricted syllabus for each dance is explained below.

  • Salsa Casino (Cuban Style): Salsa style consistent with Danza Loca’s SALSA CUBANA CLASS SYLLABUS including combinations and derivations thereof. Essentially derived from Son, though incorporating many turn patterns and influences and breaks from Rumba, Timba, Mambo and Reggaeton. Judges will be looking for authentic Cuban motion and flavour. For Salsa Casino, Restricted 1 means figures danceable will be limited to figures and techniques up to and including Danza Loca Intermediate 1 level. Restricted 2 means figures danceable will be limited to figures and techniques up to and including Danza Loca Intermediate 3 level. Competitors may dance (break) on 1 or 2 but must stay consistent throughout events.
  • Salsa Linea (Club styles such as L.A, Millennium, N.Y. etc. on 1 or on 2): Linear, Cross-body based styles with a focus on smoothness, connection, precision and speed. Restrictions at level 1 limit the amount of personal rotation (spins) to less than 1 ½ (540 degrees) over 1 bar (4 counts) for both dancers. For example, a cross body with lady’s pivot turn to left (“Coca Cola”) is acceptable, while a lady’s double underarm spin to the right is not. Competitors in Restricted Level 1 shall also not dance any dips or drops.
  • Merengue: Simple Dominican “marching” dance accentuating the typical Latino body and hip action. Restricted level 1 competition intended for novice dancers restricts the syllabus to the basics and variations taught in Danza Loca’s Free Intro Lesson:
    • Basico
    • Izquierda
    • Ronde
    • Maxixe
    • Separado and variations
    • Exhibe la (y Lo).
  • Bachata: Like Salsa Linea, restricted by footwork/techniques rather than combos. Restricted level 1 means combos comprised only of chases, forward turns, walks and pivots. No reverse (“hook”) turns, no syncopated turns or double-spins, rhythm breaks (dancers must maintain 123&4) or dips/drops. This coincides with Danza Loca’s Bachata level Beginners 2B, although there are many other possibly danceable combos not included in our syllabi.
  • Cha Cha Cha (23-34bmp): Must be danced on 2 (Contra-time). Restricted level 1 corresponds to the Bronze Star Latin Medal Syllabus of the A.I.D (Australian Institute of Dancing).
  • Bolero/Rhumba(24-28bmp): Must be danced on 2 (Contra-time). Restricted level 1 corresponds to the Bronze Star Latin Medal Syllabus of the A.I.D (Australian Institute of Dancing).
  • Son: Must be danced on 2 (Contra-time). Salsa in the “classic” style. Son figures and style are taught on Mondays and Saturdays during the Cuban Extension and Salsa Enrichment programs. Only allowable Casino turn patterns usable in Son are 2 bar (8 count) variations of Enchufla, Vacila La and Coca Cola- No combinations however. Most Rhumba/Bolero figures in keeping with Son character/style at faster tempos will be acceptable.
  • Jive/Swing (37-42bpm): Restricted level 1 corresponds to the Bronze Star Latin Medal Syllabus of the A.I.D (Australian Institute of Dancing).
The restricted syllabus for the Australian Institute of Dancing can be downloaded by CLICKING HERE. The steps applicable to Danza-Rama have been highlighted accordingly.

NON DANZA-LOCA STUDENTS & PROFESSIONALS?

DANZA-RAMA #1 is already generating huge interest across our studio and out into the Latino and Latin loving markets. Participation in these types of events will be of massive benefit to all participants; students, dancers, teachers and entertainers; both directly and indirectly. Events like this set realistic, achievable and fun goals for students and teachers alike, bringing greater focus and motivation to each lesson, and throughout the student’s learning experience.

As Principal of Danza Loca, I would like to extend the opportunity to get involved to all dance professionals and their students. The option to enter students in the competitions, partner them in Pro-Ams or teams or even to present a student/teacher spotlight performance is available to anyone with a healthy interest in the success of our industry.

Studio representatives are invited to contact me personally regarding any of the above, your interest or concerns.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Simon Fryda – Principal Danza Loca.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

For the purposes of DANZA-RAMA #1, all social & Latin American dance teachers (whether Danza Loca staff or not) are considered “Professionals”, as are paid teaching assistants, or any one who has received formal training toward becoming a dance teacher, or remuneration for teaching dancing. These people are considered to have an unfair advantage over regular dance students in regards to resources available for competition preparation.

Such professionals, whether active Danza Loca staff or not, are invited to register their interest to partner students in the Pro-Am and Pro Team Events, or even present a Spotlight demonstration.

  • While competitors may enter different events with different partners, they are expected to maintain the same partner for all heats and finals of the same event.
  • Competitors must marshal in nominated marshaling area (or be on the floor competing in the prior event) 2 minutes before each event in which they are competing.
  • All competition entry fees are to be paid prior to the event, preferably by November1st. Entries after this date incur an additional 20% charge on entry fees.
  • Entries with payment MAY be considered on the day if logistics allow.
  • Competitions with insufficient entries registered on or by November 1st may be cancelled
  • Lifts, tail spins and high back kicks are not permitted in any Competition or Championship held under DSA Rules.
    • For the purpose of this rule, a lift is defined as a movement during which a competitor has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of the partner.
    • High back kicks, for the purpose of these rules, are defined as when the entire back leg is raised higher than the knee of the supporting leg.
  • Compete courteously
