TUESDAYS
THE MUSTANG BAR, 46 Lake St, Northbridge
(Wheris
Map) (Google
Map) Check out their own website
and map.
Tuesday's Salsa
is at THE MUSTANG BAR, Lake St,
Northbridge, just 100m away from the Varga.
With
many of our
other classes reaching full capacity, we are very happy to
give
you the chance to salsa at another venue. The Mustang Bar has
a
history of
supporting other dance styles and we hope you guys will show
them
what Salsa is all about!!! Please remember though, that while the water
is free, it is important that you support the venue and BUY A DRINK to
ensure the sustainability of the nights.
If you know where the Varga is then getting there is easy. Head up Lake
St away from the railway lines, just past the park on the corner of
James St (that is where Dome and Valentinos are). It is also
near Nandos, Timezone and "The Elephant and Wheelbarrow" (on
the
other side of the road). For those that remember the Pallas, it was
leveled for that park on the corner... It isnt far and you can park in
all the same places.
Getting
there:
Car:
Street parking
is the best early in the evening. Pay parking is best
at Roe St (entry off Roe St!) and the open air carparks near Rosie's
(Cnr James and Milligan) also try around the park there.
Bus: to
Wellington St Bus Station, you may need another bus from
Esplanade.
Use Transperth's "Journey
Planner"
with your destination as suburb Northbridge
Train:
to Perth station and about 500m walk down James St.

and Gugeri St, Claremont. Across the road from the Claremont Train
Station. Free street parking, or at the Post Office and shopping
center. (Map)
Wednesday
classes are a little quieter and smaller than Thursdays, so
if you would
like more individual attention you might like to try Wednesdays at the
Claremont.
Wednesday classes at the CLAREMONT HOTEL are
pumping along, with a
great vibe for the practice session
after classes.
Please turn up on time and register when you arrive (even if you have
to go back downstairs for a drink!). Recently classes have been
starting late because students have been late registering. We do not
want to have to introduce a too-late-no-entry policy.
7.00 pm :
FREE Introduction to SALSA and MERENGUE
If you have not
danced before, then this is the class for you!
8.15 pm :
SALSA CUBANA: Beginners to high Intermediate levels.
Currently
running 6 classes (but subject to change)
B1a, B1b, {B2a&b combined}, {B2c
&
Int 1 combined},
int2, {i3 & Adv combined}
Please
note that some classes are combined on Wednesday.
The actual class breakdown will depend on who turns up (on time!).
Sometimes you will be working at a level with other students that are
above or below your 'official
level' but rest assured that the classes are still targeted directly at
you! For example, when working on footwork
you already know we will introduce advanced bodywork
for you to perfect, etc. All of which is very important in making you
look and feel like a great dancer! Please feel free to tell us what you
need to work
on in these combined classes.
THURSDAYS
- Gilkison's
Dance Studio
- 45 Murray St Perth (Cnr Irwin St)
(Map)
NOTE: Gilkison's is a licenced venue with a dress code
like any other club/pub. You must present photo ID to the venue's door
security (regardless of how old you look). You must also be
dressed smart casual. Men, as a minimum you must wear good (not torn)
jeans/pants and a t-shirt and covered shoes. Women must be dressed
smart and have shoes. Unacceptable clothing includes:
Thongs/flip-flops, torn jeans, shorts, tank tops/sleeveless tops, and
sports and offensive text/logos. The venue managment are strict and you
will be refused entry if you do not meet their quite reasonable
requirements. With apologies, we at Danzaloca cannot make exceptions
for you, even if we know you.
Havana
Jam moves from the Varga Lounge to the great new venue at Gilkisons.
Gilkison's is a fantastic established dance venue. Huge
wooden floor, fully licenced bar, DJ, lighting, video screen, ample
parking nearby, the works! ! !
Now we
have the opportunity to use their fabulous facility for THURSDAY SALSA.
Lets show them how the Salseros do it and stick around for a great
party. We'll be running the same Thursday formula with the free class
and some intermediate levels at 7 and the rest of the classes at 8.
As always, PLEASE support the venue and buy a drink (or two!). The only
way a salsa night survives is for the bar to make a return on their
investment in letting us use their fabulous facilities!
We will be running the same Thurdays formula, and we strongly encourage
you to take the opportunity to participate in the 7pm classes for
beginners 2b, and all intermediate levels!
Getting there:
Car:
Some street parking
is nearby. Pay parking is best
at the open air "fire station" carpark (entry off Hay or Murray st).
Bus: to
Wellington St Bus Station, you may need another bus from
Esplanade. Use Transperth's "Journey
Planner"
Train:
to Perth station and about 500m walk down Barrack and Murray St

If
you
have danced
before and want to try out our salsa classes, one of our
instructors will have a quick dance with you to put you at an
appropriate level.
When you turn up, keep these things in mind:
Dancers
of other styles
(such as Latin ballroom, jive, ceroc etc) are always encouraged to join
us starting with
the beginners group to get the most enjoyment out of Salsa Cubana. You
will learn quickly and should be at a more challenging level within a
few weeks. Use this time to also refine your body action! Join the free
class for a revision on Cuban hip and body action, it's not just a
beginners class!
Experienced
dancers
of other styles of salsa (including LA, Millennium and NY
styles, and sometimes those who have not learnt locally) usually
need to join
the Beginners 2a class if they are not familiar with the 'vacila'
(ladies slow
Cuban turn) and basics of Rueda. Yes!, you do need to know
what
the steps are called, it is how we will communicate what we want in all
the levels. If you truly know your stuff then this is easy...
'Advanced'
dancers
from other salsa schools will often find our
Intermediate 3 level has steps appropriate for them (turn up at 7pm and
do 2 classes for only $25 to get you into our seriously advanced class
even
faster).
Our Advanced class
features a huge range of hard core figures to really challenge you
(Only for truly serious salsa dancers! A high level of skill is
expected for you to be invited and to remain in the Advanced class to
keep it fair and interesting for all). And remember that Saturday
classes contain even more Advanced technique and individual attention.
Of course, don't hesitate to speak to any of our friendly staff about
getting into the right class for you. Please remember that being asked
to join a lower level you than you might think is not a slight on you
but simply a requirement
that you are familiar with our prerequisites for the higher levels, so
that the class remains enjoyable for both you and your
classmates.
SATURDAYS
- King St Arts Centre (357 Murray St,
Perth) (Map)
Under 18's
are welcome Saturday. Presented at a studio venue, not a
pub/club.
3.00-5.00
pm : SALSA CUBANA styling WORKSHOPS with various moves from
the Cuban Salsa curriculum and other Latin dance styles.
Still 2 hours for
only $20.
For all
levels, including Beginners to Advanced.
For the first hour we usually work on body action and styling,
sometimes in another dance style, with
serious attention payed to correct hip and back action (which comes
from your feet!) and often throwing in fun short routines to practice
these concepts. In the second hour we split into groups (Now usually
running 4 classes: absolute beginners, beginners 2,
intermediate
& advanced) and work on steps from our Cuban
Salsa curriculum usually pushing you to a higher level than the regular
classes (to remind you of all the good bodywork you just worked on!)
